Cadet's Extra Credit Section

Welcome to my Blog Site Cadets... Get use to using the Blog Site as you know the Computer Technology is here to stay and you cannot run or hide from it! Blog sites are currently being used in college by the students and University professors - Blog sites are also used by all branches of the military and it's soldiers.
This is just another way to communicate, provide information, and express ones opinions. By definition a Blog Site is nothing more than a daily journal.
Alright to get you started below and then post your comment:

With the continuation of the War on Iraq (and forces deployed elce where...), the down fall of Saipan's economy, and your families economic situation (some are good, even, and hurting), and Saipan resently putting to rest 2 more of its sons (fallen Heroes)... I know and realize many of you cadets may be considering joining the military as a "wayout"... Are you prepared for what may lie ahead for you (possible deployment to war)? Do the benifits (leaving Saipan, earning a good paycheck, learning a new trade (job skill/s), etc...).

If you are not joining the military and are college bound... Are you ready? Did you take your SAT/ACT test? Did you apply for the college that you want to attend? Did you go to their web site and look at the admissions cost (registration fees, tuition cost [per credit hour], health insurance, lab fees, student services, room & board, etc)... How much money are you going to spend on food? Vehicle (yes/no) cost including gas, maintainence? Clothing (also depends on the state [your use to Tropical weather]), personal expenses: cell phones, personal computer, phone, cable, water, electricity, DATES, etc...
Planning is EVERYTHING! SGM and myself have been drilling this into you since you first became a cadet, so..... Are you ready? Do you have a plan?

Armed Forces or College bound?

As a junior in high school, I'v been inspired by my good friend also my batallion commander to get a taste of both worlds.

I have requested and received information from four universities in the US and the Air Force Academy. I have taken the SAT Reasoning Test and will take another one on December 07'. I haven't applied to any colleges but I will during my senior year.
I am afraid of joining the military, but I really want to attend the Air Force Academy. If that doesn't go as I expected then by then hopefully I'm accepted by the colleges I apply to. I will apply for financial aid and scholarships to pay for my education as an undergrad.
I'm not sure what I am going to do exactly, hopefully by next year I will have the answers. As of right now, I am 50/50 on armed forces or collegebound.

I hope planning includes not wearing a uniform that looks like you slept in it!!!

Be proud of the uniform cadets. Former soldiers, like myself, notice when you and your comrades look like soup sandwiches!

I was one of the folks who went Army and went to college. I paid for school myself and had the best of both worlds.

Unfortunately, the world today is a bit different than when I was in so I recommend joining the Air Force or the Navy.

Think of it this way...

In the Air Force, the officers do the fighting (pilots) and there's not a whole lot of sand to patrol when you're in the Navy.

Sure, we infantry types poked fun at the chubby services but if you are hesitant about joining yet still want to serve your country then that's the way to go.

That’s the advice I’d give my own brother and sister.

Brad

PS-And if you do join, then make sure you get everything in writing. Your recruiter will try to get you in just about anyway he can. If they say that they ask for volunteers for optional schools after basic training THEY’RE LYING!!! Get it in writing or tell them to step.

Right now, I am 60% college bound and 40% for the armed forces.
Eversince I was a Sophomore, I had my mind set one of the academies: first for West Point, then Annapolis, and then I set my mind for the Airforce Academy. I took my physical for the academies and to my surprise, I qualify for getting into it. I am now waiting on my results from the Airforce Academy.
Another decision that I want to put myself through is college. I know going to a regular college isn't as prestigious as going to one of the academies, but I have to keep my options open just in case the Airforce Academy doesn't work out. During the summer of 2006, I attended Yale University and got a taste of the college life. I admit, it was stressful to have 2 courses crammed up in a month and a half but it was very mind blowing in a good way. But anyway, I've applied to a few colleges, 2 already accepted me and I am waiting for 3 more colleges to reply. I have received scholarships from the schools and plan on going to the University of Portland if the Academy does not work out with its paperwork. I do plan on finding a job to pay for all my necessities and other things.
The reason why I am more towards an education is because that will take me to the future. I will not go directly into the military without a degree. So basically, education first, and then a military profession.

College bound or Armed Forces?

I think that because of Saipan's economy, many of the youth looks as if they only have one path to choose, which is to serve in the military. thinking that it is the only choice they can make. im actually for both, but yet my heart favors college. It is because college could prepare me for what will come in the future. besides after college i have the option whether to get a real job or if it is still an interest, then join to military. i have already taken my SAT,i am already applying for scholarships and i did apply for colleges.Im getting myself ready for what the real life has to offer and college is the way that i choose. BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY!!!

Brad - Trust me when I say, you don't have to worry about SSHS JROTC cadets looking like "Soup & Sandwiches". We are ALWAYS seeked out for Color Guard, Wreath Layers, Ushers, etc... from various organizations on Saipan knowing the quality of our cadets... our records speak for itself. Being a former recruiter of 5 years I have totally exposed most recruiters for how the really operate and why. Believe it or not I am totally PRO-COLLEGE... However Brad - You been here as long as I have... How many families here can afford to send their kids to a quality college... the Literacy rate here is...finally, have you seen these kids SAT results as well as ASVAB scores? I have... We have lots of work ahead of us. As you will find out - Our kids at SSHS JROTC do think very realistically and of course they have SGM Kiyoshi and myself to protect them from "the Recruiters"... But, yep you are sooo right in your comment... My advice to kids join is try to get into Special Ops (Civil Affairs, Military Intel, Psy Ops, etc...) which provides a hell of door openings to high paying Government jobs (not on this island though)

Hafa Adai SFC (Ret) "Hawk", as a former cadet and a graduate of SSHS class of 2006, this is a great concern to the youth today.
I, at one moment in my life, wanted so badly to get off Saipan (the "rock") so badly that it meant at any means neccessary. Many youths today face this unfortunate mind set. I remember coming into your office one day with my mother to seek your advice about pursuing a military life or a college life. I remember you telling me your expreience and how it would have been different if you had chosen college first then military.
To the youth of today, keep in mind everybody is different. Some are meant for the military and others are not. It isnt that you arent smart or strong enough for either college or military, it's just people have options that work better for them. I know so much people that could make it into the military, smarts and strength, but that same amount of wits could go into college.
I think most youth in Saipan look toward the military, because it is an EASIER option than going through with college. I mean who would want to spend all there time with applications for college, scholarships, and so forth. Honestly, all the time spent on doing college preparations is worth it. High school, especially SSHS, does prepare you for college. Take it from me, I know. I am going through college, and am getting updates with my fellow graduates. College life isnt as bad as everyone thinks it is. Trust me, if you are a student of SSHS nothing will be new. It's actually easy. Even if you arent in "honor classes", it doesnt matter. Honors is just a class where they really give you work and see if you can handle it. School is school. Classes are classes. Dont be afraid to try something new. Go beyond your own exprections not others. Just remember that COLLEGE is for ANYONE.
I know the big worry with college is FINANCE. Hey, there is so many options out there. Just take the time to work on it. Look to your counselors, teachers, school faculty..they are there for a reason. Dont take them for granted. They want to help you with life and life after high school. All you have to do is one little thing, ASK FOR HELP! Dont be ashame.
Pro-college is the way to go my fellow cadets/youth. Dont be suckered into the military. Recruiters will stop at nothing to get you to sign that piece of paper that will bound you to things you guys never agreed on. If you do decide to proceed with the military, make sure everything your recruiter says in down on paper and not just by his word. Read carefully, there is FINE PRINT there that you just might over-look. Dont be a sucker for an easy way ouf of life from Saipan.
Whether you choose college or military, just make sure you have thought it out and have seen ALL the options provided. Do you best now and it will be easier later on.
SFC (Ret) Hawk, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Without you, I would have made the biggest mistake of my life. I am glad I talked to you about military and college. Please keep the "Pro-college" mind set to the cadets and other youths of SSHS.

Hey...

Who said that college is everything for you, or that college has better things for you than the military.

Not everyone in the world is a child prodigy. Everyone is born defferent and most people just don't measure up to attend college.

Like hey... I have problems myself with academic knowledge. I failed the ASVAB test three times in a row and I still won't give up. My only problem is to get pass the test. From there on, everything will be easy for me.

I can handle being in hostile condition that is why I chose the military path.

Like what JFK said...

"Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country..."

But hey... don't count me out on not having a backup plan if the military path doesn't work out.

Of course... like everybody else, I will seek out a college degree.

HELL, I ain't living in this raggedy ass place for another 18 years or more.

Motto: "Do now and regret later"

I live up to this motto and you should too.

Why?

Well, why go through life unnoticed...?

hey SGT. Hawk..i finally had time to stop by and see wat the blog site was all about... it's really interesting actually... well i don't really know exactly what were suppose to say, but i'll just write whatever i feel... first of, i never thought that ROTC was for me.. never before attending high school have i thought about ROTC or the military, but my mom wanted me to join , because she thinks that it's a class i should get involved with...and actually i'm really glad that she did. i'm proud to be part of the MANTA-RAY BATTALION, because i've learned so much things from ROTC, many things that i would have never pushed myself to learn... physical fitness that's not my thing.. but you've helped me learn that i really do need to take care of myself... and the knowledge you've stalled upon us... would definitely help us through life. i know that i can use it one day..SGT.Major and yourself have done so much for us cadets and you both had taught us so much... You pushed us to be the best and that's what we are. you pushed us to be number one and that's who we are.... You made many of us believe in ourselves that we are unbeatable only if we trust in ourselves.. While being in ROTC we not only learned to be a leader and to follow orders but we also learned our strengths and our weakness which really helps us to be better... ROTC is home for many of us.. and it wouldn't had been this way without all the love, support, and dedication from you and SGT. Major.. You both taught us the true meaning of the JROTC mission: "To Motivate Young People To Be Better Citizens".. because that's what you've done... you motivated us not only to be better citizens , but to be better and do better in general... So thank-you for all the things that you've taught us.. it wouldn't had been the same without you.. oh and encampment was fun.. i didn't think that i would survive, but i did yea.. i'm still breathing and i still have both my legs..Haha.. thanks for all the laughs your one kool teacher...... so i hope that i get my extra credit now... cuase i need it...

hey sgt Haugh...well i need the extra credit big time...ur question is dealing with after highschool where would you go...well i am thinking on going to college in the Philippines or anywhere that's less expensive like you,thailand...but there's the other side of me that would want to go the military...it's scary to leave the island but it's life and i need to get a life out ther.

so it's a 50/50 chance on college and the military. it really depends on what life is heading...
